This course is an in-depth exploration of writing poetry. The main focus is on producing our own pieces and in order to do so, we will spend part of every lesson with the discussion of an aspect of writing. This ranges from the question of how to find inspiration and how to combat writers block over various different forms of writing to the process of publishing work. The forms of poetry discussed will include: the sonnet, the haiku, the ghazal, the villanelle, as well as free form, the prose poem and poetry slam. There is of course room to incorporate other forms as well, if so desired. Based on our discussion of the weekly theme we will then write poetry that engages with the style discussed (conforming to it, breaking it, changing it… whatever appeals to you). There will be room to ask questions and share inspirations during the writing process, of course. Afterwards, there will be room to discuss what we have written within a safe space. There is no pressure to do so, though, if you do not feel comfortable with this. The language of writing/instruction will mainly be English. There is no need to speak English perfectly however, and we can also discuss matters in German should the situation call for it. In your writing, feel free to incorporate other languages that you feel connected to as well, of course! There is no limit as to how to express yourself on the page, after all.
